Election Night Results and Protection section

The editors have been working on posting the Election Night Results and Protection section at our sister-site, IMDiversity.com, whittling down the crazy array of info out there to compile live coverage streams, a shortlist of places to locate coverage, as well as a detailed section of resources (some ethnic- or language-specific) for identifying, reporting, and getting assistance confronting any voter intimidation, obstruction or other problems today.

Anyone who encounters voter obstruction is encouraged to consult the section, and/or to contact 1-866-OUR-VOTE (English), 800-966-5946 (Multingual Asian), or 1-888-Ve-y-Vota (Spanish), as well as the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Voting SectionCall 202-307-2767 or toll-free at 800-253-3931.

In day's earliest voting, a small "landslide" for Obama

It's far from a reliable predictor of the course the rest of the day will take, but the traditional gathering of a handful of eligible voters in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, NH at midnight to cast the nation's first election day ballots was nonetheless an exciting way to kick off the concluding day of this year's epic presidential race. As the AP reports:

Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on. Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes.

Local Democrats were reportedly surprised and delighted by the results, which usually tend Republican.

The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

Reports are careful to observe that the voting events -- based on a minute voter sample -- are not predictive.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every
eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them,
the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

As a result, our country was able to wake up to a bumper crop of headlines, generated while we were sleeping by the international press, somewhat ironically proclaiming Obama's "landlside" victory and "Obama wins!"

Obama's "New America"

With a growing wave of support in the press, public opinion, polls, and invigorated volunteerism in the campaign, Senator Barak Obama appears to be the new leader our nation both needs and wants. The winner of tomorrow's presidential election will immediately have to face an economic crisis, failed foreign and domestic policies, as well as environmental issues.

Colin Powell endorses Obama

CNN is reporting that "Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat's 'ability to inspire' and the 'inclusive nature of his campaign.'

"I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming
onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be
voting for Sen. Barack Obama," Powell said on NBC's Meet the Press.

"Powell said he was concerned about what he characterized as a recent
negative turn of Republican candidate Sen. John McCain's campaign, such as the
campaign's attempts to tie Obama to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

"'I think that's inappropriate. I understand what politics is about -- I
know how you can go after one another, and that's good. But I think this goes
too far, and I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow. It's
not what the American people are looking for,' he said."

"I am Beyond Honored"...

Obama's reply to Powell's Endorsement...
"Earlier I mentioned General Powell and how grateful I am for his support. But I am even more grateful for what he said about the nature of this campaign. Because Colin Powell reminded us of what’s at stake in this election – for America and for the world. He reminded us that at a defining moment like this, we don’t have the luxury of relying on the same political games and the same political tactics that are used every election to divide us from one another and make us afraid of one another." OBAMA wins the Debate, again...

Leading in the polls before and after this final debate, Senator Barak Obama is looking more and more like the next President of the United States. Without a doubt, Obama has consistently remained cool under fire, informed and ready to tackle the real issues, and exuding the spirit of leadership most desirable to American voters. To get all of the facts, or an official review of the debate (Click Here).

CONTROVERSY, SLANDER & LIES...

The Obama Watch has sought to focus on the issues that really effect our lives rather than false reports that misguide public attention to partisan battles and controversial comments.

However, to offer a comprehensive and honest view of what's happening in this 2008 Presidential Campaign we do offer the following overview of hot topics:

1) Bill Ayers - Obama has been accused of "palling around with terrorist" for a reality check on Palin's "racially tinged" comments (Click Here).

2) McCain's transition chief pick Timmons and their links to War profiteering and the regime of Saddam Hussein... (Click Here).

3) PBS Poll - "Is Palin Qualified" - This was NOT a scientific poll, it was an unhelpful test of partisan manipulation and mobilization that allowed people to vote more than once, a pitch really for internet hits. (Click Here) and read more... before forwarding anymore "Urgent" e-mails on this truly irrelevant issue.

4) Video of Palin's daughter's baby's "Black" Daddy captured our attention, again an issue that is more hype than anything relevant to the presidency (Click Here) to hear the voice of the youthful alleged father set the record straight.

Final Presidential Debate Tonight...

Most reports and polls portray Obama as the clear leader, while McCain has to, "score a knockout" in this, the third and final round of the 2008 Presidential debates. As voters and Obama supporters, we must however remain proactive and vigilant. Encourage others to get out and vote early. Obama is "our" Presidential hopeful, but his victory is essential to the sustainable future of this great nation and of our planet as a whole. For more on the presidential debates (Click Here).

Phony Outrage Won't Work...

Obama has been attacked for using McCain's language "Lipstick on a pig..." Reluctantly posting anything on this overblown issue, I had to offer this link, once the BBC news (international media) joined in the negative and biased reporting that accuses Senator Obama of making a "sexist statement". Such ludicrous reporting is an age-old tactic to steer popular opinion with gender sensitive sensationalism, lies, and racially coded attacks on underrepresented Americans. Again, race, gender, class, and other divisive tactics can no longer serve as blind motivations for our choice in leadership. (Click Here) for Obama's clarification.

Comparing Obama to Palin...huh?

What's to compare? It seems that the presumptive image of "white male" leadership is so programmed into the American psyche, that news coverage of the Presidential Campaign is actually comparing Presidential hopeful Barak Obama to the Republican Vice - Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin. Gender vs. Race is the final hope for those who oppose Obama's exemplary leadership. Noting the emerging tsunami of negative press (click here) on Palin's track record (click here), can our nation really stand to continue being misled by biased sensationalism, stale slogans, and morally coded bigotry?

Campaign Heats Up Over Energy

Obama sharply denounces Bush/Cheney policies regarding energy and economy...
Obama's facing issues rather than "Ads" and "representation". The race for the Presidency has finally focused on the real issues facing our nation: Energy, Economy, Environment, Equity... Obama clearly has a new vision for the nation - it seems from recent polls - more in alignment with the real interests of a more informed populace. Are the days of catchy slogans, and assumptions of moral superiority in campaigning finally surpassed by an informed public's demand for redress of real issues?

The "Official" Obama Resource...

Register with Obama's official website...
For more information on how to donate to Obama's campaign, and to get more involved they send out e-mails announcements and invitations to local events, the "official" site is a wonderful "how to support" resource. However, stay tuned to BCO's Obama Watch for news updates and relevant coverage of the historic 2008 Presidential Campaign.

Will the real First Black U.S. President please rise...

Who was or will be the first Black U.S. President?
The above link offers a clear warning that thorough research should precede claims and guide all investigations - especially when researching on the internet! There is a raging dispute online about the first and other "Black U.S. Presidents" as celebrities like Dick Gregory (who claimed the John Hanson in the first photo was our "The First President of the U.S.") However, checking other sources - as well as Toni Morrison's comment about Bill Clinton - have made it clear that race is not only an urgent but multi-faceted issue, far more complex than many of us are prepared to examine beyond our own claims and biased tropes. Now seems the time that Americans really begin to address Race, especially it's historical complexity!

Obama Leads in National Poll but...

Although Obama has 6% margin in recent polls...
Reports of a national poll conducted from July 31-August 4, interviewing over a thousand adults, places Obama predictably in the lead particularly with support from Women, African Americans, and voters under 34. Obama is also even to his rival in points of support from white men. Polls don't win elections however, they may influence perceptions. Electoral Votes ultimatley decide Presidential elections.

I'm no fan of "blogs" in general, but when the information is useful and concise, without blabbering personal opinions, blogs are invaluable. This one presents excellent coverage of Obama's speech yesterday in Berlin. Often politics are reduced to "either / or". Obama is doing an excellent job of avoiding either home or abroad, by addressing the concerns of Americans both at home and abroad.

Obama urges Iran to accept EU nuke proposal

Obama continues to take the lead in leadership...
Presidential hopeful Barak Obama continues to draw international attention while addressing the pressing issues he would face as President. In today's meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, he is again demonstrating not only leadership, but clarity on his intended foreign policy, though ongoing face to face meetings with foreign leaders. Obama's travels throughout Europe and the Middles East affirm his stated approach to foreign policy an ability to, "not only to project power but also to listen and to build consensus." How will you vote?

Obama holds ground while opening doors in Israel...

Pesidential hopeful Barak Obama visited Israel today...
His visit was designed to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to Israel's Security, but unlike other American Diplomats, he also met with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Obama promised to immediately address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, once elected, without yielding any ground to dissenters who insist that his approach to the Middle East is dangerously idealistic. Obama also addressed the need to deal with nuclear nonproliferation in Iran, without taking any threatening posture. Humanitarian leadership may finally guide our Nation's international interests. It seems that patriotism may find new modes of expression without the need for good-old-boy/macho politics.

Can Obama Unify Americans and the World?

Senator Obama is travelling to Europe and Middle East this month, to garnish and anchor international support for his 2008 Presidential Campaign.  It seems that resistance to his inevitable leadership is most consistently based on a racially charged resentment from so-called "conservatives".  On the other hand, support for Obama seems both because of and in spite of race.  His supporters are considered largely "thinkers" embracing a global-world-village.  It seems that humanity across international and cultural borders, is poised and ready for the overdue eradication of assumed "white" privilege and superiority.  Change is indeed in the air, locally and abroad...

Obama on National Security

My Plan for Iraq - by Obama
This New York Times article offers insight on Obama's views and plans for resolving the ongoing War in Iraq.  Obama's approach is uncompromising, humanitarian, compassionate and well thought out.  This is leadership, not a front for backroom business deals or coded pseudo-nationalistic rhetoric.  We may finally have a leader as President.

Curious about Obama's plans for Homeland Security?
The Washington Post offers coverage of Senator Obama's announcements that outline his vision for a secure homeland.  His ideas for "Change" we can believe in... include a "national cyber-adviser" to address computer security issues, and continuing his agenda for nuclear nonproliferation...

Obama and Maliki, see "Eye to Eye"

Obama's exemplary leadership shines as he visits Afgahanistan and Iraq. His recent meetings with President Talabani of Afghanistan, and Prime Minister Maliki of Iraq, as well as General Petreaus, demonstrate a preparedness to fulfill his anticipated role as Commander in Chief.

Tasteless Caricature cover of The New Yorker...

How much does Race factor into the Presidential Election?
Magazine portrayals of Presidential hopeful Senator Barrack Obama, clearly convey the polarizing and inherent sentiments stirred by American race consciousness.

The Associated Press and Obama's spokesman slam the New Yorker's "Tasteless and Offensive" portrayal of Obama in a turban, "bumping fist" with his wife Michelle, who's donning not only an exaggerated Afro, but fatigues and an M-16 slung across her shoulder. Caricatures have always had their place in political satire, but where is the line drawn? How might race shape the expectations, perceptions, and reactions of all Americans? Only time will tell... but it seems that Obama's Presidency would shed light on a lot of America's covert and overtly racist sentiments.

Obama's Energy Plan

Although this link is a couple months old, it covers current questions, recently raised about Obama's long-standing work toward America's energy independence. It seems that Obama's Presidency may indeed loosen the vise-grip that the "military/oil/industrial complex" has held on our nation's leadership for generations. In short, Obama's vision may best improve foreign policy in trade and war, while also addressing gas prices, and global warming.

Obama Watch 7-10

United for Change
http://my.barackobama.com/ufcvideo
This short but sensitive video, demonstrates the need for people to come together, black, white, young, and old. In United for Change, people are coming together as neighbors and communities, those who all agree that there is an urgent need for change in our nation. Senator Barak Obama clearly represents change and thus hope for unity. His approach to government and the numerous issues we face, have remained focused on the interests and needs of the people. In this particular video, we get a heartwarming introduction to the spirit of change that people are pursuing in their support of Obama. Although, this video as many others doesn’t offer detailed information on his policies, accomplishments, or goals for the Presidency, it does convey the unity that his Presidency promises for our nation. Unity is the hope that this nation is in urgent need of, and Obama represents that hope for positive change.

Star Jones' Response To Bill O'Reilly's Racist Comment
http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/2008/02/26/open-letter-star-jones-checks-bill-o-reilly-s-racist-remark/
Star Jones – slams Bill O’Reilly for using the terms “lynching” and “party” in the same sentence, while referring to the “next First-Lady” Michelle Obama. Bill O’Reilly apparently “hung himself” by trying to make an analogy between his use of lynching and Justice Clarence Thomas’ use of the term during his confirmation hearings. Star successfully challenges the inherent assumption of entitlement, lack luster excuse of an apology, and the threatening and apparently threatened posture of some Americans who apparently still believe that the American dream still has no room for real equity for all people…. GO get ‘em Star!

Democratic Party Hosts Platform Meetings…. http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/listening/
Democratic Platform Meetings are being held from July 19 to July 27, everyday Americans will be hosting Platform Meetings across the country. This is a long overdue opportunity for everyday people to shape the Democratic Party’s platform by shaping what issues are in the forefront. Formerly, this seemed reserved for major campaign contributors, organizations, and political pioneers. This is already an indicator of positive CHANGE… something Senator Obama’s campaign seems poised to promise and deliver.
